I bought the book with the intent of hearing some first hand eye witness testimony on a historical revival. For my purpose, I highly enjoyed the first chapter. My interest was in the overall scheme of what Mr. Edwards saw and what transpired around 1733 in his town of Northampton, MA. In this regard, I got what I wanted.It is a short read. Two of the chapters were reflections on two specific individuals experiences during the revival.
Mr. Edwards also spends a chapter analyzing the different experiences and manners in which people were generally affected which is interesting to reflect upon and one may find some commonalities on one's own conversion, as the reviewer did.
I think the book could be improved with a chapter added that sheds light on what happened after the revival or some of the later events of Jonathan's life.
So, with that said, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it, but it may leaving you wanting more. But, for me, I am always wanting to know more! :)

This is a description of the First Great Awakening in America. Jonathan Edwards, a brilliant, educated, great writer with keen psychological insight gives a wonderful description of these incredible revivals.
I just finished reading this first hand account of the move of God, now known as the Great Awakening, in Northampton, Massachusetts in the 1730's. If you long for revival and enjoy the flow and formality of 18th century literature, then you would love this book.
This is a crucial historic document. It is most helpful to view the increase of revival in one corner of the American Dissenting colonies. This record of Edwards' became influential during the British evangelical revival and further across Europe. It is historically significant for that reason as well as being an important record of the expectations and early workings of revival in America.
Jonathan Edwards' first person account of the New Bedford Awakening in the 1730s is, despite almost three centuries passage, as fresh as today. His witness is credible on its face, and God's love permeates his illustrations based on what he saw and heard. I consider it a primer, for this or any century, on grass roots evangelism, prompted by the awakening outpouring of the Holy Spirit in person after person. There is no denying the mystery of God's choosing the timing and locale of His gift; nor any doubt in my heart that such an Awakening can come to us at any time of God's choosing. Thanks be to God
